Tim Donaghy blames Rasheed Wallace's technicals on his intelligence

Tuesday, December 8, 2009

We've all seen Rasheed Wallace blow up at a ref, earning a technical, and loudly screaming "Ball don't lie!" if the technical free throw is missed.  But did you ever think he might get all those technicals because he was just too smart?

From a Tim Donaghy interview with WEEI, via WEEI's Green Street:
Which NBA star is most loathed by NBA officiating crews? This A.I. story comes to mind. Is he the one?
I don’t know if he’s the one because there were both positive and negative relationships associated with A.I. There was one referee that actually kissed him at a captain’s meeting before each game. I would say, unfortunately, I know he’s on your team right now, but Rasheed Wallace was someone I don’t believe anyone cared for. Looking back, it’s probably because he’s one of the smartest players in the league. He was outspoken about how there were biases and how relationships affected the refereeing.

So they got mad at him because he was telling the truth about their biases?
Exactly.
So it's Rasheed's intelligence that gets him all these technicals, not the fact that he animatedly argues almost every call against him?  Right, Donaghy.

Wouldn't it make more sense that if Rasheed was going to talk about the referee's biases every time he received a technical, and they didn't want their biases unearthed, that they'd be even more lenient with Rasheed?  That they wouldn't want to give him technicals, for fear that he might rat them out in his rants to the press?

If you ask me, this is just one more Donaghy story that screams, "Liar, Liar!"  At the same time, I'm sure Rasheed probably doesn't mind the explanation.
