Paul Pierce blogs again, about changes he'd make to the NBA and the world

When Paul Pierce released his first blog post yesterday, I thought it might be a long time before we saw another one.  Boston.com said he would be writing in "occasional installments", and I worried "occasional installments" might mean "hardly ever installments".  So you can imagine how excited and surprised I was to see Pierce updated his blog again the day after his first post.

This time, he writes about three things he would change about the NBA, two things he'd change about the world, and one thing he'd change about himself.

Since the world pales in comparison to the NBA, I'll show you one thing he wrote he would change about the NBA:
Raise the rim 3 inches: The athletes today are crazy. You see the way guys are jumping these days. I would raise the rim 3 inches. Then, you have to learn the art of the jump shot. You'll have to know how to play this game a little bit better then. Raising the rim, you'll see increasing play. You'll see increasing fundamentals. I'm telling you.
It makes sense Pierce would want to raise the rim three inches; he plays mostly underneath the rim anyways.  One word of caution though, Paul: If it ever is raised three inches, you probably shouldn't try dunking too much.  You might end up looking like this guy:

True, take the empahasis away from dunking and more emphasis would be placed on fundamentals. This could only help young big men. How troubling is it that the league's highest jumper (Howard), a center, can't even play with his back to the basket? Actually, Howard jumps so high that an 11 foot basket wouldn't even affect his game. The best high school big men don't apply a jump hook to their game until their second year in college. But then again, you'd be asking the league to all but eliminate the very aspect of the game that increased it's popularity from the 80's to the 90's.

I'm not so sure how I feel about it. I think raising the rim would certainly increase fundamentals; there would still be some players who could dunk everything home, but that number would be smaller.

As far as the big guys like Howard who never learn a post move until the NBA, you're right that three inches wouldn't affect them. I think it would have more effect on the wing players, like a Bill Walker for instance, who rely mostly on superior athleticism and hops. It wouldn't be as easy for them to adapt to that extra three inches.

I'm not so sure it would hurt the game. It would change it, for sure, but it might be for the better. Then again, the women's game is focused solely on fundamentals, and I'd rather watch paint dry than be stuck watching a WNBA game. I don't know; raising it three inches might be fine, but anything more than that would be getting crazy.

It would make the game more intersting, maybe even draw more interest to the game.

It's getting to the place if you hate watching the Yankees/Boston buy the pennant each year, why watch the NBA either?

Raising the rim is something I’ve been suggesting for years- the players have out-grown the court… I would make the court itself bigger(wider/longer) also-more room for passing/fast breaks/3 pt'ers from sides if wider(tho i know they won’t like giving up courtside seat space). The same should go for hockey(play with olympic size rink allows for more open skating/rushes) I don't watch pro basketball or hockey anymore(college hoops is ok for now)-has become boring- more room to play might just be the ticket for more action
